  • Dari and Pashto are two official languages of Afghanistan.  However, Afghanis prefer Dari. The language belongs to the Northwestern Iranian sub-category. Dari has multiple similarities with Kurdish, Balochi, and Gilaki. Therefore, the languages are very confusing. Afghanis call Dari a Persian sub-dialect. It is also called “Eastern Persian.”
  • One-third of the Afghani population, roughly around five million people, speaks Dari. Furthermore, at least 2.5 million speak Dari collectively in Iran and Pakistan. Unfortunately, the Iranian version of Dari is almost extinct as it has been replaced with Persian.  Thus, endangering its existence.
  • Dari holds immense importance in Afghani society. Besides being a national language, it is the standard communication language between Afghanis who speak different dialects and languages. Primary schools teach Dari across Afghanistan. Songs, poetry, and national radio stations use Dari as well.
  • Dari began surfacing in the sixth century BC.  It resulted from the Cyrus Parthians defeating the Personas and Zoroastrian priests. Soon after, Persian lands commonly spoke Dari. It became the official language at the Sassanid courts. Later on, the Muslim invasion in the sixth century AD influenced the Dari language. However, during this time, the individuals kept speaking its original form.

  • Bamiyan caves in Central Afghanistan are home to the first oil paintings ever. These date back to 650 BC. The cave illustrations present the imagery of a flourishing Buddhist empire from the second century. The civilization lasted until the 9th century, before the Islamic invasions.
