What inspired the Serbian Alphabets?

The Serbian language is an adaptation of Cyrillic alphabets. It was derived from Serbo-Croatian in 1818 by the linguist Vuk Karadžić. The Serbian nation adopted the Cyrillic language in the traditional sense primarily. However, it was later adopted in the official capacity through its Constitution.

The language is based on 24 alphabets from the original Cyrillic letters. However, when the Constitution was developed, the letters я, щ, or ъ were taken out. Instead, a new Latin alphabet, j, was introduced. The Serbian also has unique characters added to its script. These are Ђ, Љ, Ћ, Њ, and Џ.

  • The inventor of the linguistic Serbian Cyrillic, Vuk Karadžić, created the ligature Њ and Љ with the help of Sava Markalj. It was created by combining the later L, N, and b, or the Л, H, and b from Latin and Serbian Cyrillic alphabets.
  • The character Џ is inspired by the Cyrillic alphabet “Gea” of Romanian origin.
  • Karadžić created the letter Ћ from the voiceless character tɕ.
  • The Serbian letter Ђ was created from a close collaboration between the linguist Karadžić and Lukijan Mušicki. Consider it an evolution from a similar-looking Serbian letter Ћ. However, Ћ was solely created by Vuk Karadžić.

How is the Serbian language different from other Cyrillic Alphabets?

  • There is no use of the hard ъ or the soft ь in Serbian Cyrillic. However, the previously mentioned b is perfectly acceptable.
  • Й or Ў of the semi-vowels category are not included in the Serbian language.
  • The Serbian script converted letters of Russian, Bulgarian, and Belarussian characters to Је, Ја, Ју, Ји, and Јо. Initially, these letters were Э, Я, Є, Ї, Ё, and Ю.
  • The letter J in the Serbian script is interchangeable by й when a semi-vowel is required.
  • The character Щ has become extinct. Now the characters ШТ or ШЧ render its use.
