Whether supernatural or mythical, scary creatures have been a part of our stories for centuries as they are passed on from one generation to the next. From folklore to horror series, these creatures haunt us with their terrifying looks and horrific auras. We have put together a list of the scariest of them all:

1.    Bai Ze

It is a scary beast from Chinese mythology. The Bai Ze, or white marsh, looks like a white ox that has nine eyes and six horns. Three of these horns are on the head, while the remaining are on the broadsides. While it looks very scary and haunts the children but it is actually considered a good omen by the Chinese.

2.    Banshee

The Banshee is a scary creature from the Irish myth. It means ‘faerie woman’ and is considered the bearer of bad or unfortunate news. According to the Irish myth, it is a fairy that moans outside of a house to warn the residents about the death of one of their family members. She is depicted as an old and pale-faced woman covered with a veil. Although she appears to be scary and spooky, she means well and only is there to inform you with good intentions.

3.    Ushi-oni

The Japanese myth is loaded with beasts and monsters. The Ushi-Oni is one such scary creature that is an ox demon. It is a deadly monster that particularly haunts the fishermen in the sea. It is depicted differently in the different regions of Japan.

4.    Alp 

The Alp from the German folklore is a vampiric spirit that is not only malicious but is also able to shapeshift. From cats to dogs to snakes and even butterflies, it can take on any form. They were believed to haunt children, men, and women of all ages in their dreams. It is said to cause many sleeping disorders like sleep paralysis and sleep apnea.

5.    Chimera

A scary creature from Greek mythology, the chimera, a three-headed hybrid monster that breathes fire. It has the body and head of a lion, a goat’s head on the back, and tails end with a snake’s head. This legendary beast is very mighty and deadly and the child of Typhoeus, according to the myth. The Greek myth shows it to be slain by the hero Bellerophon who comes riding on his winged horse called Pegasus.

6.    Baba Yaga

It comes from Slavic folklore and is portrayed as a witch. This old and skinny witch is capable of dark magic. It flies on a mortar and not a broom. It is also known as the spirit of the forest. She offers guidance to only those that ask for her help very respectfully. Parents often use her name in Russia to scare children and keep them from wandering.
